Since the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America in the early 1990s, first nations people have been organizing into native groups and using international organizations like the UN. In 1992, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Rigoberta Menchú Tum, a Mayan from Guatemala. 1993 was then declared International Year of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
