France, 1483. A mysterious messenger arrives at the castle of King Louis XI. Weakened by illness, the suspicious old tyrant receives the messenger who reveals a plot to assassinate him that very day. Ministers and family members have become convinced that the time has come for the king to die.
But they don’t call him “The Spider” for nothing. His castle is a web of spies and intrigue where he plays daughters, sons-in-law and even an imprisoned archbishop against each other. The murderous plot is foiled as Louis plays out his final game. The wily old king outwits his archrival with bloody counterplots, ensuring that his daughter Anne will take the throne when he has gone.
