Synopsis
Whistler (1834-1903) was born in the United States but made his career in Europe. Provocative and impertinent, he signed his paintings with a butterfly. After an artistic training in Paris he settled in London and became fascinated with Japanese art as well as with the atmosphere of the Thames. His masterpiece is ®Arrangement in Grey and Black, a portrait of his mother.
