Synopsis
Every year, 330 million bottles of champagne are sold – and that number that is set to grow significantly due to a recent decision of the French government. For the first time in 80 years, the land where winemakers are allowed to produce authentic champagne has been expanded.
Overnight, vineyards increased in value 300 times as they prepare to produce one of the world’s most popular luxury products. Global demand for champagne is exploding, with new markets like China, India and Russia consuming an ever-increasing share.
But, what does this mean for the villages and vineyards in question? Can champagne producers increase quantity without sacrificing quality? With more and more competition, can champagne guard its pristine heritage and retain its position as the unquestioned queen of wines?
