Synopsis
The short and unhappy life of Gilbert Vilars, and his rebellion against his bourgeois background. He falls in love with his younger cousin Renée, but she marries his older brother Justin. Exasperated, Gilbert leaves for Paris, where he writes controversial articles for a paper. One such report causes him to be arrested and sent to prison. Gilbert is confused, his life is such a contradiction, and he seems resolved to lead a life of misery
