Synopsis
Abandoned by her lover, a mature woman, Fanny de Lussange, retires to the country to forget. There she is courted and conquered by the love of the young nobleman Louis de Nueil. But Fanny falls prey to doubt and depression. Finally, she abandons Louis, urging him to marry his cousin Caroline. Hurt and bewildered, Louis enters into this illstarred marriage. The years go by, but Louis continues to long for Fanny and leaves his wife and children for her. Realizing the hopelessness of the situation, Fanny lies, claiming that she never loved him. A tragedy ensues provoked by her sacrifice for love.
