MANDELA: IN FREEDOM'S NAME
1 x 90 '
Synopsis
Who is the man behind the legend?
Nelson Mandela is an icon. A hero. An symbol. An inspiration.
Few world leaders can take responsibility for a truly historic endeavor. In the developing world, Gandhi’s struggle defined the first half of the 20th century, Mandela’s the second half. His life is forever entwined with the tragic history of a nation struggling for liberty and a continent tormented throughout the 20th century by incredible upheavals.
At the age of 89, Mandela has retired from his official duties and devoted himself to the fight against AIDS. So, the time has come for us to take a step back and get a sense of perspective on the man, his life and the heroic dimensions it has acquired.
It has been an improbable life, which led from a remote Transkei village to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway. An exceptional political life in contrast to a personal life dotted with tragedy and failure.
We set out to reveal the real Nelson Mandela.
From his humble beginnings, he has become known as one of the wisest and most acclaimed personalities on the planet. He seems to possess an inner nobility that grow stronger with every affront. Yet, he started out as an ANC militant and explosives expert. We examine the long journey and fascinating contradictions of a life dedicated to a single higher purpose.
We will not treat Mandela with the reverence of a saint.
Instead, we will explore his life in the context of a country that is little known and poorly understood and a continent going through the painful and bloody upheaval of decolonization.
