Zatoichi is a mystery. He cannot see. His eyes are blank. Zato wanders endlessly the world over.
He errs through time, a vagabond. Alone, desperately alone, in the midst of a Japanese society slipping into decadence. He is poor and of interest to nobody. Rubbing shoulders with peasants and prostitutes, he plays in gambling dens and observes the world of these people of no consequence from the inside.
And then, suddenly, he becomes the dispenser of justice...fighting social inequality, misguided samurais, criminal organisations and corrupt authorities.
And he wins … again and again.
From his blind man's stick springs a formidable sabre that slice and slashes, severs limbs and cuts off the heads of his terrifying opponents. The world of those who see is not for him. He is elsewhere, nameless: the Zatoichi, the blind man. He is universal and perhaps immortal.
