YURI MOROZOV, UNDERGROUND ROCK
1 x 52 '
Synopsis
Yuri Morozov, the precursor of 1970s underground Russian rock, has made over 60
albums. They were copied on amateur tape recorders and distributed clandestinely in
the USSR.
This 52-minute documentary paints a portrait of this veteran artist. Yuri Morozov
enjoyed underground success, then later on, official glory during the days of Gorbachev's
Perestroika and Yeltsin's Russian-style capitalism.
Rock musicians in the 1970s were persecuted by the KGB, "treated" ? like all dissidents
? in mental institutions or simply sent to the camps with no justification given.
But rock musicians and fans resisted, and an unknown side of the USSR is revealed
through previously unseen amateur 8 mm footage, secretly filmed during the underground
concerts and gatherings as hippies sprang up in a parallel world.
Morozov was surprised and distraught by the completely unexpected sight of the raising of the Iron Curtain. Since then, this
non-conformist artist has carried on doing what he does best.
