PIANISTE DE LA SIERRA MADRE (BANFF TV FESTIVAL FINALIST 2006); LE
1 x 52 '
Synopsis
Ten years ago he decided to settle up in the Sierra Tarahumara, North West of Mexico, among the last northern american indian tribe refusing the western way of life.
1000 meters above the ground, in a rock face, Romayne Wheeler organized a troglodyte home which is also used as a concert hall.
Romayne has been adopted by the indians who come to his place to listen what they call "water music ?, what means piano playing and Romayne on his side uses Tarahumarian music in his original compositions. The money he is making from the concerts he gives allowes him to help this isolated population.
What appears to us is the universality of his music, which moreover becomes a way of communication between so different people, especially in such an isolated scenery.
Romayne Wheeler's every day life, musical exchanges with the Indians, the care he takes of the children, and his composing facing the vastness of the canyons illustrate the peculiar character of this figure and the unic link he has build with this specially authentic ethnic group !
An esthetic document, far from usual ethnological clichés. The meeting of two musical universes, taking place in one of the most natural impressive background on the planet.
