Synopsis
Five performers return to the Spectre de la Rose that the Fokine choreographed for Nijinsky and Karsavina to music by Weber as adapted by Berlioz and a libretto by Jean-Louis Vaudoyer based on a Théophile Gautier poem. The range of the performer, who linked them together without a break, is praised. His own version is not lacking in emotion. Motionless on a chair in bright light, he could be Nijinsky himself, locked into his madness before the final leap. In Larrieu's intentionally plant-like version, which is done on the ground, the dancer's mobile hands, like a thousand petals, lose their leaves with restrained effusion. The legs' movements on the ground are exact, dense and advisedly concise. Pedro Pauwels gives himself up so strongly to his movements that grace is born from this very release. Ribeiro's version on the other hand is violent and bleeds on the stage starting with dozens of roses thrown down and stomped on in rage by the performer. That is, he portrays here the work's blood. It is this form of exhaustion in the effort beyond grace that the choreographer has sought from Pedro Pauwels, who is not left wanting. The Belgian artists has a wonderfully powerful expressiveness and demonstrates a virile gestural harmony. He approaches dance with a devilish rush not without a delightful anxiety enhanced by mad elegance.
