Synopsis
In the 17th century, the theater was in the center, and so as to have common points of reference, the Théâtre Richelieu named the sides of the stage: left and right - or in French, "courtyard" and "garden".
In Avignon, the theaters overflowed in a general profusion of shows and over the course of a number of summers, began to occupy the gardens and courtyards. What are these places when they are not occupied by theaters? Who uses them? How are they transformed and transcended to become, for a few short hours, the cradle of imagination and dreams? Is there not in this transformation a little of the magic which makes the actors, as they move from the wings into the spotlight, become characters and heroes to the audience?
And perhaps, here more than elsewhere, the magicians of these transformations are the technicians: the stagehands, electricians, and lighting and sound crew...
