XENO TRANSPLANT: CURRENT RESEARCH
1 x 54 '
Synopsis
In 1963, Keith Reemsima in New Orleans and Jules Traeger in Lyon carried out a transplant of chimpanzee kidneys onto patients suffering from terminal kidney failure. In 1992, Tom Stazi carried out the transplant of a baboon's liver in Pittsburgh. The patients survived 3 to 9 months. The operations are examples of xeno-transplants, transplants from one species to another.
Today, the success of allo-transplants, transplanting organs from human to human, has come up against limits - thousands of patients are waiting for the organ which will save their life, there are not enough donors.
