Synopsis

In 1500 Portugal's 100,000 jews were forced to chhose between conversion to catholicism or exile. They converted in mass but the majority of them continued to practise their religion in secret in mortal danger. They were known as ® Marranos ¯ or ® Pigs ¯ and heavily persecuted.Almost all of these people have now disappeared. But this film reveals that there is still a small community of around a hundred people in Belmonte, who continue to practise in secret a clandestine Juadaism five centuries old.
