SIMON BOCCANEGRA

Synopsis
"Simon Boccanegra" is set in 14th century Genoa, whose byzantine politics are well captured by a complex plot involving kinship, social class and romance. An illicit liaison between the Doge's daughter and a plebiean seafarer Simon Boccanegra (Alexandru Agache) has resulted in the birth of a daughter, Amelia. Now a young woman, Amelia (Kiri te Kanawa) has been brought up by a nobleman, and one narrative line concerns the quest by Boccanegra to find his daughter and her own discovery of her true parentage. The central role of Boccanegra is one of the most demanding - and rewarding - baritone parts Verdi wrote, majesterially sung by Alexandru Agache in this visually exciting Royal Opera performance.
